Dear Art Rooney II,
I have never been a big fan of the Rooney Rule, but I do understand its intended purpose. What is the Rooney Rule? This rule requires an NFL team to interview at least one minority for an open head coaching or senior executive position. The NFL put this particular rule into place during the 2003 NFL season because there was a lack of minorities that were being hired as head coaches and in general manager positions. The NFL probably felt like they can’t force NFL owners to hire minorities in their front offices, so the league started forcing teams to at least interview minorities whenever there is a job opening to help deal with the lack of diversity in NFL management positions.
In most cases, I believe diversity is a good thing. For example, diversity can create more positive role models for minorities. It has been helpful for example for Black boys to grow up watching Black head coaches like Tong Dungy, Mike Tomlin, and Herm Edwards. Having more role models is one reason the LGBT community fights so hard to get their members on TV, especially in movies and being hired in key positions. Because of the LGBT community’s persistence, we see members of the LGBT community in almost every sector of our society including coaching in the NFL. The LGBT community push for diversity accomplishes several things. Most notably, diversity helps to legitimize their lifestyle.

The LGBT community has put America in a very difficult position as they fight for diversity. Most Americans believe it is wrong to discriminate against any type of people, but some also believe it is wrong to legitimize homosexuality. The LGBT community’s push for more rights has led our society to rethink about what it means to be discriminated against. Years ago, minorities and women were the two major groups most Americans felt were faced with constant discrimination. Then the homosexual community tricked America into believing that they are born with an abnormal set of sexual preferences.
Just like many minority groups have moved from fighting for rights to lobbying for more privileges, the LGBT community is moving from fighting against discrimination to promoting more diversity. When a group fights for diversity, in many cases they are not necessarily telling us that they are being discriminated against, but rather they want to see more of their own people represented in different industries. Where will this push for more diversity end up? I wouldn’t be surprised if we created a Rooney Rule type of system designed to force industries to incorporate more homosexuals.
The sad thing is, if a company is committed to diversity, sooner or later they will start to discriminate against qualified people. Promoting diversity forces companies to hire people based on race, gender, etc. as they often overlook who is the most qualified. If any type of discrimination shouldn’t be tolerated, we much admit that committing ourselves to diversity is a form of discrimination.
It can often be hard to prove that a group is being discriminated against in Corporate America, Hollywood, and other industries, but it is extremely easy to prove that there is a lack of diversity. Keep this in mind; just because there is a lack of diversity in a particular industry, doesn’t mean discrimination exists. For example, no one cries about the lack of White men in the NBA or the lack of female auto mechanics. Diversity is only a problem when a particular group doesn’t believe its members are being “fairly” represented or treated in a particular industry.
How far will the NFL’s pursuit for diversity go? Does the NFL make sure almost every race and gender is equally represented as far as head coaches?
We are heading toward a society where we are allowing minority groups like the LGBT community to redefine what is considered fair. Many in the LGBT community want you to believe that we have not achieved fairness if we don’t have an equal amount of people represented in almost every industry in our society. Since their fight for diversity is really a fight for legitimacy, they won’t stop challenging the status quo until there is an equal amount of their members in every sector of our society, including the NFL.
One of the downsides of the NFL and other industries committing themselves to diversity is that they are helping to spread a diverse set of values that are not good for our society. Many experts at the CDC can’t seem to explain why almost every year the numbers of teens who get STDs seem to spike. No one wants us to admit that normalizing lifestyles that encourage premarital sex have been a huge mistake. Putting members of the LGBT community into more movies, on TV and other key positions will add to the diversity of America, but also will add to the massive decline of our moral values as a nation.
Rates of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia have climbed for the fourth consecutive year in the United States. Last year, nearly 2.3 million US cases of these sexually transmitted diseases were diagnosed.
Mr. Rooney was a great man who believed in giving everyone an equal opportunity to be successful in life. This is one reason I believe the Rooney Rule was designed to end discrimination and not increase diversity. Just because the NFL is trying to end discriminatory practices doesn’t mean this should lead to diversity. If we allow the LGBT community to continue to push for a more diverse society, the Rooney Rule will become the standard in our society as we confuse discrimination with a lack of diversity. This is one reason why rules like the Rooney Rule was made to be broken.
